There can be a shortage of certain chips because:
- The manufacturer made less chips in the previous period than the market later turnsout to want. This problem is most obvious with memory chips. Maxim always seems tomake too little chips... ;-). Some say that Intel also creates and artificialshortage to keep the prices high, but I doubt that.
- The manufacturer stopped making the chip.These chips are called 'obsolete' or 'phased out'.It's for manufacturers very difficult to have to keep making all their chips forevereven when they are hardly sold anymore because there are much better solutionsin the mean time. The design may also not be transferable to new techniquesso old production lines are even factories would have to be kept open.
- For design, hobby and repair purposes it may also be difficult to find thechips you want.
